As part of an artist residency at Struts Artist-Run Centre in Sackville, NB, I worked on a month-long project called Culture Sculptures. I first began by making a vast quantity of sourdough culture; this was used for daily baking but also as a "medium" for my art making. Upon pouring the culture onto waxed paper, I was able to then dry the sourdough culture into hundreds of paper-‐thin sculptures.
At the end of the residency, I gave away the Culture Sculptures and encouraged the recipients to either keep them as "sculptures" or if they preferred, they could re-hydrate them with water and use them for baking and leavening loaves of bread. In addition, I scanned and made "portraits" of the several dozen culture sculptures that remained after the residency.
