These analog images were created in the (colour) photo darkroom while I was in residence at the Banff Centre for Creativity in 2018. Irregulars, the title of this series, is a reference to galaxies that do not have a distinct or clear shape. Created in parallel with its sister series, The Organisms, these works explore my ongoing intrigue with amorphous blobs and biomorphic shapes.
The Irregulars were made using a hybrid process where I blend the tools of darkroom photography with applications of drawing and painting. In the example of this work, I have layered multiple sheets of ink-stained glass on top of photo-sensitive colour paper. Once set underneath the enlarger, light is projected through the various layers of glass and the resulting image captures the composite image onto the photographer paper. This work is similar also to a more recent series, Light Worms (also made while in residence at the Banff Centre in 2024).
